The McBurney Center is launching a new tool in the Instructor Portal of McBurney Connect to support instructors and students with the process of establishing and documenting the parameters for limited flexibility accommodations. Beginning with student accommodation requests for fall 2024 classes, instructors will complete a questionnaire in their Instructor Portal that defines reasonable limits for flexibility in each class in which a limited flexibility accommodation is requested by one or more students.
Previously, implementation involved the instructor meeting with each student to discuss and define a limited flexibility plan. The new process will involve the following steps on a per-class basis:
- A student selects their approved limited flexibility accommodation for each needed course section and a Student Accommodation Letter will be sent to the instructor on record. (If a student generates a Student Accommodation Letter more than two weeks prior to the start of the semester the instructor can still view the letter through the Instructor Portal.)
- The instructor will be notified that action is required to complete the Limited Flexibility Plan Questionnaire within McBurney Connect.
- The instructor will login to the Instructor Portal of McBurney Connect and select the Limited Flexibility Plans Module (left-hand menu list).
- The instructor will initiate and complete the Limited Flexibility Plan Questionnaire, providing detailed parameters for reasonable flexibility within each course. If expectations are the same for multiple courses, the instructor the completed limited flexibility plan to their other course sections.
- The instructor may contact McBurney Center staff for guidance and support in determining reasonable limits of flexibility in their course section.
- Students are still encouraged to meet with their instructors to discuss implementation of the accommodations in their Student Accommodation Letters.
- In the event of a disability-related flare, students will communicate with the instructor as described in their limited flex plan.
Note: The Limited Flexibility Plan questionnaire may not support the development of plans for all courses. Instructors may meet with students directly to define a limited flexibility plan for courses with unique expectations, consult with McBurney Center staff if needed, and email the finalized plan to the student and the student’s Access Consultant.
