Providing Accommodations for Visitors and Program Participants
Departments and Event Hosting Units
All events and activities hosted at UW-Madison are required to provide reasonable accommodations to all attendees, regardless of if they are enrolled as students or affiliated with the university. Most accommodations for visitors and program participants are requested and provided directly through the hosting unit. We recommend including accessible tagline statements on your event’s website and any marketing materials, in order to invite accommodation requests.
The Visitor and Program Participant Access Consultant at the McBurney Center is available to answer questions, consult with departments, and assist in identifying who to contact to make a request. To help ensure that the University is able to review and implement requested accommodations, it is important that requests be submitted as early as possible.

Requesting Disability Related Travel Accommodations for Visitors
The University is responsible for accommodating travelers in accordance with State and Federal disability accommodation laws, and the specific travel need(s) of guests may result in incurring expenses that are outside of policy or rate limitations. To consider a disability-related travel accommodation that would fall outside of policy or rate limitations for a guest, the hosting unit must contact the Visitor and Program Participant Access Consultant at the McBurney Disability Resource Center.

Resources for Accessible Events
Planning an inclusive and accessible event is important so that all participants have the same access to information, activities, and all the event has to offer, regardless of disability. Ensuring events are accessible is the responsibility of the hosting unit, but the McBurney Center is always available for consultation to ensure that event hosts have the resources and support they need, and the answers to any questions they might have.
Requesting Sign Language Interpreting or Professional Live Captioning (CART)
The McBurney Disability Resource Center coordinates sign language interpreting and live professional captioning (CART) services for UW-Madison. Digital Accessibility at UW-Madison
Accessibility @ UW-Madison is the university’s resource for providing the community with the information they need to design with digital accessibility in mind, such as training, guidance, services, or reporting a digital accessibility barrier. These resources are for students, staff, and instructors alike.
Accessible Transportation Resources
UW-Madison and the City of Madison have various options available for students, staff, guests, and visitors to successfully navigate campus with disability.
If there is a unique event or scenario (e.g. transportation to a field data collection site for a class lab or to an off-campus student organization event), please contact the McBurney Center for a consultation or reach out to the student’s Access Consultant.
UW-Madison Employee Accommodations
The Employee Disability Resources (EDR) office is responsible for providing accommodations to university employees with disabilities, including student employees. The McBurney Center has a close working relationship with the EDR, and we are always happy to connect students who are seeking employment or already employed on campus to the appropriate person or process to request accommodations as an employee. Students can also talk to their Access Consultant about how the process for employment accommodations might be similar or different from their classroom accommodations.
