Job Application Tips

The first step towards securing the job you want is knowing how to navigate the application process. With a little research, some finely tuned writing, and proactive communication, you can be well on your way to getting that call for an interview. Some tips to help you prepare are outlined below.

  1. Be aware of your abilities – only apply for jobs in which you would be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodations.
  2. Know your strengths and weaknesses, and be able to express these in all modes of communication.
  3. Have a working resume and cover letter that clearly express your experience and capabilities.
  4. Keep in mind quality versus quantity within applications. Only speak to skills and experiences that are relevant for this position.
  5. Consider disclosing your disability in your application.
  6. If you don’t hear back from the agency regarding your application, follow-up with them in a week or two to further express your interest in the position.
  7. Practice your interview skills so you will be fully prepared when the big day comes.
