McBurney Updates

  • Stakeholders Dialogue

As you know, Governor Doyle has indicated that the state is running a 5.4 billion dollar deficit that will need to be made up in the next biennium 2009-11. To that end, we believe that every campus program at the University of Wisconsin will be expected to reduce its budget in order to assist in balancing the budget. Our direction from the division and central administration is that everything is on the table for review. This includes services to students with disabilities.

While we don't yet know the cut we are going to receive, we would like to engage our stakeholders in a discussion and present our ideas about how we might adjust our budget to meet anticipated reductions. Our goal with this exercise is to preserve what we NEED to do while considering ways we can change how work is done to realize savings or reduce costs.

Please consider joining the McBurney staff at the Stakeholders Dialogue.

McBurney Reminders

  • Please check your requests for notetaking services to ensure that all of your requests were entered correctly. You should see a message to the right of each request that shows the number of upcoming service events and service events completed. We have had a problem in the past with the request process for classes that do not have times listed in the Timetable (e.g., video and web-based classes). If you have problems submitting requests, email the Notetaking Service Coordinator immediately. Students need to submit all notetaking requests by January 30 (end of the second week of classes) to receive notes from the first day of class forward. If you submit a request later, you will receive notes only from the day of the request forward.

  • Discuss test accommodations with faculty no later than February 6 (end of third week of classes). Make it easier for faculty to provide your test accommodations by referring them to the new Test Accommodations Faculty Web Page. For more information, see the Test Accommodations web site.

  • Submit your Adaptive Technology Scholarship Application by March 1. Visit McBurney's web site to download the Adaptive Technology Scholarship Application.

  • The beginning of the new semester is a great time to meet with one of the McBurney Study and Learning Skills Specialists (SLSS) Beth or Leanna, our new staff member. They can help you get organized, manage your time more efficiently, and deal with procrastination. Learn how to "study smarter, not harder." To make an appointment call the McBurney front desk at 263-2741 or email the McBurney Front Desk. To contact the Study and Learning Skills Specialists, email them at guts-slss@rso.wisc.edu. Also, visit the Study and Learning Skills Specialists web site!

  • Obtain leadership experience for your resume, have fun, and make a difference by joining Accessibility Advocates. New students who are interested in the organization, and former members who'd like to continue participating, should complete the Accessibility Advocates Interest Form. Elections for leadership positions are planned for this spring to allow current leaders to mentor new leaders throughout the spring semester.

Campus Events and Information

  • The General Access Computer InfoLabs are currently in the process of upgrading from Version 10 to Version 11 of Kurzweil 3000. If you encounter any problems with accessing Kurzweil 3000 during the upgrade, please email Todd Schwanke with information on the lab location and a description of the problem.

  • Renovations to the Education Building on Bascom Hill are scheduled to begin January 2009. If you encounter any access issues during the renovation period, please contact Jennifer Wersland to discuss the problem. Many Education Building occupants have already been relocated to other temporary locations. Completion of the renovation project is anticipated in Fall 2010.

  • Heavy snowfall and cold temperatures make travel around campus challenging, particularly for students with mobility concerns. Please review A Student Guide to Accessibility and Wintry Weather for travel suggestions and resources.

  • The My UW service team will soon be asking groups of users (students, advisors, staff, etc.) for their ideas on ways to improve the interface of the My UW portal (e.g., should it be organized differently, how can the appearance be improved, what changes should be make to the functionality, etc.). The input sessions are likely to occur in mid-February. If you are interested in participating in one of these one and a half-hour sessions, please send an email to Meg McCall. You will be contacted when a date, location and time has been confirmed.

Community Events and Information

Jobs/Internships

  • Hold February 3 if you interested in a paid internship this summer! A federal representative from the Workforce Recruitment Program will visit the UW-Madison campus to conduct interviews for a variety of internships that are located throughout the United States. A limited number of interview times will be available, so if you are interested, email Jennifer Wersland and start preparing your application. Participants will be determined on a first come, first served basis. You can also visit the Workforce Recruitment Program web site to gather additional information.
